Super Petrel XP Now Available With Rotax 916iS

In November of 2022 Super Petrel released its newest offering, the Super Petrel XP powered by the 141 hp Rotax 915iS and the combo was an instant success, selling out a year’s worth of production in a matter of weeks. The combination of the new design and the turbocharged Rotax was a perfect match that could hardly be improved upon the came the Rotax 916iS. The Super Petrel XP now available with Rotax 916iS.

Now all new Super Petrel XP orders are equipped with the new engine.

Fortunately for the loyal Super Petrel following, Rodrigo Scoda and his design and engineering team looked far enough ahead to anticipate the 916iS. The newer design is a mere 3 pounds heavier but adds another 19 horsepower and extends the TBO from 1200 to 2000 hours, with minimal design changes in the aircraft (OK, there’s a decal change).

Though already at the level of “amazing” with the 915, the performance numbers for the XP with the 916 are through the ceiling with full take-off power available for 5 minutes at 5800 RPM, and 5500 RPM for continuous power to the service ceiling of 15,000 feet. These specs are nearly the same as 915, but with an additional 14% power and an even better fuel consumption.

The 916 powered Super Petrel XP has greater range than the 915 powered aircraft with the same amount of onboard fuel. From testing the prototype XP in Brazil with the 916 Rotax engine, Rodrigo Scoda states the difference in engine torque on takeoff is very noticeable. To capture the power of this engine, the E-PROP Excalibur 5 blades are set at 29 degrees…that is some serious bite! Sea level fliers will certainly benefit from the additional kick, but those operating at higher altitudes, where loss of horsepower becomes significant, will greatly appreciate the boost, whether that comes in the form of more efficient cruise or safer short field/lake operations.

Ten XPs have been built with the 915iS, but beginning with serial number 415, the next in line for delivery, they’ll all be hitched to the 916iS. The Rotax powerplant, any Rotax powerplant, is a true state-of-the art engineering phenomenon, and the 916iS takes that excellence to the next unbelievable level.
